What is worth knowing before you set out.
On Friday night, Saturday and during the Feira de São Mateus, the best-known places fill up. The phone number is on each card.
Lunch starts at noon and kitchens close around 3pm. Dinner starts around 7.30pm. Many places close one day a week, often on Sunday or Monday.
Touriga Nacional with meat, Encruzado with fish or lighter dishes. The first is red, the second white.
81 restaurants in our directory, each with a page, opening hours and contact details.
The price is the usual spend per person shown on Google Maps and it is a range: filtering by “up to €15” also brings up places listed at €10-25, where a full meal can cost more. Places with no published price do not appear in any band.

The directory has places whose usual spend per person starts at €10 or less, mostly taverns and petiscos houses in the centre. The Google Maps figure is a range: a full meal with a drink can come out above the lower end. Most places in Viseu do not publish the price of the daily set meal: ask at the counter.
Most restaurants serve lunch from midday to 3 p.m. and dinner from 7.30 p.m. The hours we show are those of the premises: the kitchen may close earlier. At weekends and during the São Mateus Fair, it is worth booking.
These are the two days when most places close. In the directory on this page, the "Sunday" and "Monday" filters show the restaurants with confirmed opening hours on those days. Public holidays don't follow the usual hours: call before you set off.
Next to the Sé are Muralha da Sé, in the Adro, and Restaurante Porta, on Praça de D. Duarte. O Cortiço, on Rua Augusto Hilário, is also in the historic centre.
Mesa de Lemos, in Silgueiros, holds a Michelin star, renewed in the 2026 guide, and serves tasting menus at €140 and €170. DeRaiz, in Rebordinho, costs less. Both are outside the city and require booking.
Prema is the only restaurant in the directory that Google Maps classifies as vegan. Having vegetarian dishes on the menu is not the same as being a vegetarian restaurant, and we have not checked the meat-free options at the other places: ask the restaurant before booking.
Rancho à moda de Viseu and roast veal Lafões-style. For dessert or with coffee, a viriato or castanhas de ovos.
The method, the authorship and what we still do not know.
We cross-check how restaurants in Viseu rank across three public listings (Google Maps, TripAdvisor and The Fork) and keep 15 places. The rating and the number of reviews do not decide on their own: a place with few reviews gets in if it ranks well in more than one source.
Sponsored content and paid placements are labelled as such.
The rating, the number of reviews and the price range come from Google Maps, where they can still be read. The cuisine, the dishes, the booking details and the weekly closing day come from the restaurant's own site or from Visit Viseu, with the date checked shown on each card.
We do not turn Google reviews into a rating of our own. When the restaurant publishes its own menus, that is the price we show, and we say so.
74 of the 81 restaurants in the directory have no published price range, and 2 have no confirmed opening hours. We leave those fields blank: unknown is not free and not closed.
Nor do we state that a restaurant is safe for allergies, accessible or pet-friendly without confirming it with the restaurant.
