Where to start

It depends on idade

Each stage has a different network and its own enrolment rules.

0 to 3 years

Nursery. It does not belong to the Ministry of Education: this is a social-care network, with places and means-tested support from Social Security.

15 to 18 years

Upper secondary. It is the only stage with national exams — and therefore the only one with a ranking.

State network

School groupings of schools

A grouping brings several schools under one management, from pre-school to the 3rd cycle. You apply to the grouping, not to an individual school.

State network

Public vocational education

There is no standalone public vocational school in the municipality — the official network of school groupings confirms it. Public vocational education arrives by three other routes.

Upper secondary

Vocational courses in secondary schools

This is the main route. State secondary schools run level-4 vocational courses, with a work placement and equivalence to the 12th year. The offer changes every year and is confirmed school by school.

Free

IEFP — Employment and Vocational Training Centre

The municipality's public training centre, in the Coimbrões industrial park. It combines the employment and training services: apprenticeship courses for young people, adult requalification and certified modular training.

Higher education

Polytechnic — CTeSP

Just beyond secondary: the Polytechnic of Viseu's short-cycle technical courses (CTeSP) are public level-5 vocational training, lasting two years with a work placement.

List and codes from the DGAE's official 2025/26 network of school groupings, filtered for the Viseu municipality. Enrolment is done on the Portal das Matrículas, within the deadlines announced each year.

Private network

Private schools in Viseu

Private schools and private vocational education, with enrolment made directly at the school.

Is a school missing here?

We list the schools we could confirm in an official source. We do not use Google Maps for this list: Maps does not tell state and private schools apart, and we do not want to mislabel any. If you know another one, tell us.

Association contract

Some private schools have had public funding through an association contract, which changes the fees. Check the current situation with the school before counting on it.

Zero to three

Nurseries and infant care

A nursery is social care, not schooling. There are three kinds, and the difference you feel most is the price.

Means-tested

Non-profit and charitable

The largest share of places in Viseu. They hold an agreement with Social Security and the monthly fee is calculated from household income.

Pública

State and municipal network

Fewer places and high demand. Applications open on fixed dates and places are allocated by priority criteria.

Privada

For-profit private nurseries

The nursery sets the fee, with no means-tested support. They usually have places sooner and longer opening hours.

Carta Social is the official register of nurseries, with each one's legal status and capacity. It is the complete, up-to-date list.

Rankings

What the ranking measures

And, more to the point, what it does not measure. Worth knowing before choosing a school by a number.

It only exists for upper secondary

The national ranking is built from national exam averages. Since exams only exist in upper secondary, nurseries, pre-school and basic education have no ranking at all — not in Viseu, not anywhere in the country.

There is more than one ranking

One ranks by raw exam average; another, the value-added ranking, compares each school with others of similar socioeconomic background. The same school lands in very different positions depending on the maths.

It measures results, not the whole school

The number says nothing about pupils' progress, inclusion, atmosphere or distance from home. A mid-table school can be the right one for a particular child.

We do not publish each school's position here: it changes every year and depends on the methodology. We would rather send you to the official source, where the number comes with its context.
