History

The Casa da Ribeira is a 17th-century granite building put up by the Pavia river as the home of well-off farmers. Over time it was a rag store, a scrapyard, a tavern with a forge and student lodgings, until Viseu City Council bought it and set up a service there to protect local crafts.

In 2013 the council opened the building as a small museum. It recalls life along the river: the old Pavia mills, the olive press, the washerwomen who worked by the weir and the boats that sailed the river.

What you will find

  • Memories of the Pavia river mills, the olive press and the river boats.
  • A section on the washerwomen and their tools, such as the wooden kneeling board and the washtub.
  • Regional crafts and traditional trades.
  • An outdoor platform over the Pavia river, reached from inside.
