History
The Fontelo estate has belonged to the diocese of Viseu since the 12th century: in 1122 Bishop Odório received it as a gift. The bishop's palace was begun in 1399 under Bishop João Homem, and for centuries it was the bishops' retreat.
Between 1526 and 1547 Bishop Miguel da Silva, working with the Italian architect Francesco da Cremona, renovated the palace and laid out Renaissance-inspired gardens. After 1910 the palace passed to the Ministry of War and became a military prison. Restored by the City Council and the Dão Regional Wine Commission, it reopened in 2004 as the Solar do Vinho do Dão. In 2025 the woodland's listing as a national monument was announced.
