History

The panel covers the curve of the Rossio, on the retaining wall of the Rua do Soar de Cima ramp. It was commissioned by Viseu's Tourism and Initiative Commission, set up in 1926. It was designed by the Porto painter Joaquim Lopes (1886-1956), a teacher at the Porto School of Fine Arts, and the tiles were made at the Agueiro factory in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Installation began in September 1931 and it was inaugurated on 13 December that year. The scenes show rural life in the Beira: shepherds, the Caramulo hooded cape, livestock fairs and the sale of pottery from Molelos and Ribolhos. In 2018 the City Council listed it as a Monument of Municipal Interest.

What you will find

  • A large tile panel running along the curve of the Rossio.
  • Figures from the region: the shepherd with his crook, the woman in the Caramulo hooded cape and the shepherd boy playing the flute.
  • Fair scenes, with livestock, pottery for sale, food and drink.
