History

The park occupies the old grounds of the Capuchin Convent of Santo António, built in 1635 on land of the Quinta de Maçorim. The large English oaks still standing there are thought to have been planted by the friars. The convent closed in 1834, and the building and grounds later had several uses, including as barracks.

In 1955 the site became a city park. At that time the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, which stood at the southern end of the Rossio, was moved into the park. It was called the City Park until 1974, when it was named after the writer Aquilino Ribeiro.

What you will find

  • Old English oaks and species such as holly, Portugal laurel and rhododendron.
  • The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, which commemorates the victory at Aljubarrota and was rebuilt in 1605.
  • The Baroque Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis, at the end facing the Rossio.
  • Freely accessible paths for walking and running.
