History
The wall that King Afonso V had built around Viseu, known as the Afonsine wall, followed requests to strengthen the defences made in the reign of King João I, after the city had been sacked several times. The inscription carved on the Porta do Soar, dated 1472, records that the king had the city walled, joining the two older walls.
The wall had seven gates, of which only the Soar and the Cavaleiros gates remain. The Porta do Soar, also called the Porta de São Francisco, has a pointed arch and marked the main route through the old city.
What you will find
- A pointed-arch gate with a short stretch of wall, on Rua Nunes de Carvalho.
- The 1472 inscription crediting the work to King Afonso V.
- On the inner side, a niche with a statue of Saint Francis, the gate's protector.
