Winter

Museums, granite and shelter

Short days. Prioritise indoor sights and save the parks for a dry window around midday.

Check the weather Before heading out, check the IPMA forecast for Viseu. Fog, rain and ice on the granite are common. Bring a waterproof coat and shoes with good grip.

  1. Morning: the Cathedral (cloister and treasury) and the Grão Vasco National Museum
  2. A hot lunch in the centre
  3. Afternoon: Almeida Moreira Museum or the City History Museum
  4. If it's dry: a short loop around the Rossio and Jardim das Mães
  5. In December: Christmas lights in the centre and, at Fontelo, winter tastings at the Solar do Dão when there's a programme

If it's raining Swap parks and city walls for Grão Vasco, Almeida Moreira and the Cathedral interior — and, if you want to stay warm for the rest of the day, the cinema, shops or ice rink at Palácio do Gelo. Cafés in the old town make good breaks between museums. Avoid the Cava, Fontelo and the boardwalks when the ground is wet.

Summer

Shade, the fair and long evenings

Start early. In the heat, the parks and the river Pavia pay off. From August to September, the Feira de São Mateus takes over the city.

  3. Afternoon: the Dão boardwalks, the funicular or Cava de Viriato
  4. Late afternoon on the Rossio; in the evening, Praça D. Duarte
  5. If the dates line up: Feira de São Mateus, Verão no Parque or jazz at Aquilino Ribeiro
What to do today

Autumn

Harvest time and golden granite

September and October link the Feira de São Mateus to the colours of the Dão vineyards. Bring an extra layer for the evening.

  2. Solar do Vinho do Dão or a wine estate (many open for the harvest)
  3. A walk at Fontelo among the autumn leaves
  4. If the fair is still on: the Feira de São Mateus grounds in the late afternoon

By car

The A25 / IP5 connect well to Viseu. Park in the car parks around the centre and walk up to the Largo da Sé.

Getting to the Rossio

By coach

Viseu has no railway. Coach services arrive at the bus station; from there it's a city bus or taxi to the Rossio (a few minutes).

Parking

Avoid the pedestrian core at rush hour. Go for covered car parks or ones on the edge of the old town.

Good walking temperatures all day — ideal for Fontelo and the centre.

São Mateus

The fair lights up August and September: concerts, food and atmosphere until late. Book accommodation early.
