The institution
What it is exactly
Public higher education, founded in 1979, with its central offices on the Repeses campus.
New name
Now a Polytechnic University
Since 1 August 2026, the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu has been called Universidade Politécnica de Viseu. Law 32/2026, which reformed the legal framework for higher education, converted every polytechnic with a positive evaluation — thirteen across the country. It remains public polytechnic education, with the same schools and the same courses.
Plenty of things still say "IPV": the schools' websites and e-mail addresses, the student portal and most of the paperwork.
Since 1979
Four decades in the city
Founded in December 1979, it began with the Escola Superior de Educação — the first polytechnic school to open in Portugal. Today it brings together five schools and more than five thousand students, four schools in Viseu and one in Lamego.

Campus
What there is in Repeses
The main campus lies south of the centre and holds the ESTGV, the central offices, student support and the halls of residence.
Buildings
A teaching and administration building, two workshop halls and the Professor Fernando Sebastião multipurpose building, whose upper floor houses the research centre and the business incubator.
Sport on campus
A grass football pitch, an outdoor multi-sports court, three tennis courts, one pickleball court, a sports hall and three gyms — martial arts, fitness and gymnastics.
Getting to the campus
Repeses is south of the centre, under ten minutes by car from the cathedral, with free parking inside the campus. By bus, it is served by the MUV city network.

Two years, with a placement
CTeSP
Short-cycle professional courses: four semesters, a work placement at the end and a level 5 diploma. They do not award a degree, but they open the door to a bachelor's through a special admissions route.

How to get in
Routes of access
Not everyone comes in through the national round. There are five doors, each with its own deadlines and its own place to apply.
Bachelor's degrees
National admissions round
The usual route for school leavers. The application goes to the national higher education directorate, not to the school, and runs in three phases each year.
Special admissions
Over-23s and other routes
Anyone over 23 who did not sit the national exams, anyone who finished a short-cycle course and anyone who already holds a higher education qualification applies through a special route, run by the institution itself.
CTeSP
Each school's own round
Short-cycle courses do not go through the national round: each school issues its own call, with its own places and deadlines. Applicants from the PEPER network of schools get priority for half the places.
Already studied elsewhere
Transfers and re-entry
Anyone previously enrolled on another course or at another institution comes in through a transfer; anyone who dropped out and wants to return to the same course applies for re-entry.
Master's degrees
Second cycle
Master's admissions are run by each school. Besides graduates, they accept holders of an equivalent foreign degree or a professional record recognised by the school's scientific board.
Deadlines slipped your mind?
Nor do we: they change every year. The official calendar for each phase is published on the applications portal and, for the national round, on the DGES site.
Student support
Grants, a bed and a meal
Student support is a service of its own, based on campus. Almost everything that costs a student away from home money goes through it.
Non-repayable
Study grant
An annual state grant for households with income below the threshold set by law. The application has to be submitted every year, even by previous holders.
The main window usually opens in mid-August and closes in early October; anyone enrolling later has 20 working days from enrolment.
320 beds
Halls of residence
Three halls in the city, with 132 double rooms, 50 singles and four adapted for special needs. They have fitted kitchens, study rooms, a laundry and round-the-clock security.
Priority goes to grant holders living away from home. Outside the deadlines, places are still assigned subject to availability — and a fourth hall is under construction.
Subsidised
Canteens and bars
Three canteens, two snack bars and five bars, with meat, fish, diet and vegetarian options. Meals are booked in advance — and the ESTGV canteen is the only one serving dinner and opening at weekends.
The canteens close in August.
Free
Health and counselling
General practice, psychology and psychiatry appointments for the academic community, booked on the service's own platform. The GP clinic runs in the multipurpose building and also at the Escola Superior de Saúde.
It is one of the least known and most useful forms of support for anyone arriving alone in a new city.
Unforeseen events
Emergency fund and social shop
For a drop in income mid-year there is immediate support, in cash or in kind, open to grant holders and non-holders alike, at short-cycle, bachelor's and master's level. The social welfare desk also refers students to the social shop.
Up to 20 h/week
Student work grant
Working on the institution's own activities — up to four hours a day — in exchange for support proportional to the hours worked. It tops up the study grant and depends on there being work that fits around your timetable.

Mobility
Students from abroad
There is a separate admissions route, a service that handles your arrival and a European university alliance.
International admissions
Applicants without European Union nationality apply under international student status, with its own round and calendar, outside the national quota.
On arriving in Portugal
After enrolling, three things need sorting: the residence permit, registration at the health centre for the area you will live in, and a tax number. The international office guides you through it.
Erasmus and EUNICE
Besides Erasmus+, the institution belongs to EUNICE, an alliance of European universities offering short exchanges and course units shared between partners.

Life as a student
In September the city changes pace, and in May you can hear the campus from the other side of the valley.
Since 1997
Students' union
The AAIPV is the federation that brings together the student associations of all five schools. It was founded in 1997 and is the body that runs the student week and negotiates on students' behalf.
Spring
Student week
The city's biggest student festival, held on campus between late April and May: concerts at night, a parade through the streets and a serenade. It fills the city and disrupts traffic and transport for a few days.
Competition
University sport
Futsal, handball, basketball and volleyball teams, men's and women's, plus swimming, athletics, tennis and martial arts. There is student-athlete status for those who compete and classes open to the whole community.

Mentoring and ombudsman
There is a mentoring scheme pairing first-years with older students, and an independent student ombudsman for complaints the school cannot settle.

Common questions
What people ask most often
Polytechnic or university?
Both: the name became Universidade Politécnica de Viseu in August 2026, but the teaching remains polytechnic — more technical and vocational, with three-year bachelor's and two-year master's degrees.
Is it all in one place?
No. There are four addresses in Viseu: the Repeses campus (ESTGV), the ESEV on Rua Maximiano Aragão, the ESSV next to the hospital and the ESAV at Quinta da Alagoa, in Ranhados. The fifth school is in Lamego.
I did not get a room in halls
Grant holders left without a room can receive a top-up towards renting privately. Each school's student association usually keeps lists of rooms.
Is there other higher education in Viseu?
Yes: the Portuguese Catholic University has a campus in the city, with courses of its own. It is in the arrival guide, alongside everything else you need to sort out.
How much does it cost?
Tuition at public higher education institutions is set by law and is the same across the country; enrolment fees and the prices of meals and halls are published each academic year. We do not copy them: they change, and a wrong figure here would cost anyone doing the maths.
