The essentials of the Cava

And what, despite the name, it is not.

  • An earth octagon

Eight ramparts and a 16-metre-wide moat, across more than 30 hectares. It is considered the largest earth construction in the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Not Viriato’s

The name comes from legend, but the latest readings point to the first half of the 10th century. National Monument.

  • The warrior statue

At the entrance, the bronze Viriato by Mariano Benlliure, from 1940. It is what most people photograph first.

A walk in the Cava

Inside the walls, lawn and olive trees.

  • The rampart loop

The dirt path follows the rampart from inside. The most unusual walk in the city.

  • Running in the Cava

Flat, in the shade of the olive trees and car-free: one of the places where Viseu runs at the end of the day.

  • With children

Open lawn for running around safely, with the rampart always in sight.
