Walking route

From bottom to top, in three stages.

  1. Start at the Rossio

The square is the natural starting point: buses, terraces and the Christmas Market in December.

  2. The climb of the shops

Shoe shops, haberdasheries and neighbourhood stores hold out among new storefronts. Climb slowly and look up.

  3. Arrival at the churchyard

To reach the cathedral square, leave Rua Direita via Rua de Augusto Hilário and continue through Praça D. Duarte. Rua Direita continues north towards Teatro Viriato; it does not end at the cathedral square.

What sets this street apart.

  • Old signs

There are painted letters and worked stone that tell the age of the trade. Worth photographing.

  • Buy local

The street for packing a Serra cheese, a Dão wine or a regional sweet in your bag.

  • At Christmas, another street

During Christmas 2025/26, vacant shops hosted regional products. Check each edition's programme to see whether the initiative returns and which spaces take part.

The city’s Christmas programme: Viseu Natal (Christmas in Viseu).
