The former palace of the bishops of Viseu is now the home of the Dão Wine Route: you can taste the region's labels, book visits to the estates and walk through the old woodland of the Fontelo.
The great grapes of the Dão
Granite soils and a climate sheltered by mountains give wines of freshness, minerality and great longevity.
Touriga Nacional (red)
Held to have originated in the Dão region, it makes deeply coloured wines with aromas of violets and wild berries. The tannins are firm and the wines age well in bottle.
Encruzado (white)
This white grape produces structured wines with mineral aromas and citrus notes. Barrel ageing adds complexity.
Alfrocheiro & Jaen
Alfrocheiro brings colour and notes of ripe strawberry and blackberry. Jaen (Mencía) adds smoothness, a delicate raspberry scent and round tannins. Both are used in Beira blends to balance the wine.

Rancho and veal with Dão reds
With rancho à moda de Viseu or roast Lafões veal, try a Touriga Nacional or a red Dão blend. Their acidity and tannins balance these meat dishes.
Serra cheese and cured meats
For a starter of corn bread, buttery sheep's cheese and smoked paio sausage, choose a young red or an Encruzado with brief oak ageing.
